| الملخص: | Due to the plasticity and moldability of the initial clay paste as well as the advantageous material properties after firing, ceramic vessels have been and are still used for various functions, such as storage, transport or food processing. In the case of cooking pots, thermal properties, such as rigidity at high temperature, thermal shock resistance, heat capacity and thermal conductivity are particularly relevant. The thermo-mechanical performance of ceramic vessels is affected by the actual material – its composition, microstructure and the firing conditions are all factors – but also by the design of the vessel. To investigate their thermo-mechanical performance and understand their functionality, the compositional and microstructural analysis of the ceramic material is combined with material testing. However, in the case of archaeological ceramics, the material testing of entire vessels is not an option. Replicas can be manufactured and used as substitutes for material testing. Alternatively, digital models can be generated and investigated through computer simulations. Structural modelling can be applied on different scales, starting from the microstructure and its effect on the effective material properties up the modelling of the performance of entire vessels in use and the assessment of their design. |
