| Samenvatting: | The Autonomous Center for Religious Teaching and Pedagogy (CAEPR) also called theology department is an educational department of the UFR of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Lorraine located in Metz. The statutory particularities of the CAEPR arise from a convention of May 25, 1974 concluded between the Holy See and the French Republic. It establishes the prerogatives of the Bishop of Metz in the functioning of this department, particularly for the appointment of professors and teachers. The main objective of this center is to provide clerics and lay people responsible for Catholic religious education in primary and secondary schools in Moselle with appropriate training. Religious authorities have also over a long period asked future priests to train within the framework of the CAEPR. The Bishop of Metz decided in 2018 to break ties with the CAEPER and to put an end to public university training for religious executives, regretting that these overly elitist training courses do not take into account the “human, spiritual and pastoral dimensions”. |
