The paradox, well-known among social science researchers, that the improving of general education level does not affect a relevant increase of social, has stimulated in several authors an harsh criticisms of meritocracy: it should be nothing but a “system justification” and “preservation” of existing social inequalities. Instead, according to Boudon (2001) the best way to fight against the inequality in education is to reaffirm the cognitive function of school by means of strict evaluation criteria and educational guidance connected to outcomes of learning. |
