| Samenvatting: | This paper is a brief exploration of some otherwise mundane objects, or possessions in Ben Jonson’s Volpone. By bringing recent social science considerations in actor-network/thing theory to bear, the strange agency of inanimate objects becomes more apparent. Though agency does not always imply volition, the coins, plates, and pillows strewn about Jonson’s play can (and do) shape the eponymous fox’s fate. By expanding critical considerations to actively include non-human actors in Volpone, complex matters of perception and deception can be productively explored in new ways. |
