Sumario:The scientific literature shows that in Montréal the attitudes of allophone speakers toward Québec French (QF) remain more negative than those of francophone Québécois. Some French second-language learners reject QF and conform to a historically more prestigious variety, namely French as spoken in France (FF). This article explores partial results from an online survey conducted to better understand the attitudes and representations of 54 German speakers living in Montréal towards QF and FF. Through scenario-based questions, we aimed to determine which variety or varieties they would prefer to master. The group is divided: 30 participants chose FF and 24 QF. The justifications for their preferences highlight several received ideas about linguistic varieties and their speakers. The results also reveal the influence of social networks on linguistic attitudes and suggest that it is crucial to control for the factor of origin (country / continent) when investigating the attitudes of allophones.
