| Sumari: | Launched on June 22, 1944, three years to the day after the invasion of the USSR, Operation Bagration completed the liberation of Soviet territory. The Red Army succeeded in regaining Belarus and destroying, at the same time, almost all of the German « Central » Army Group. This success should not be attributed to the large numerical and materiel superiority of the attacker. The latter had been able to create an original military concept, that of “deep operations” which led to the rapid disintegration of the adversary’s position. Operation Bagration also included strategic planning of great energy, for it shaped the outcome of simultaneous or successive operations in the neutralization of Finland and the conquest of Eastern Europe. In doing so, the Soviet triumph, concomitant with the Allied landings in Normandy, accelerated the collapse of the Third Reich. |
