Résumé:Gift Conceptions and Practices in Islam In “History of the Moral Ideas of the Semites”, Marcel Mauss catches a glimpse of an important transformation of the gift affirmed as a “moral idea”. This article documents this transformation by examining some conceptions and practices of the gift in Islam. Through source analysis and a socio-historical perspective, this article reconstructs a variegated reality of gifts in the Arab-Islamic world in response to sadaqa. This original form of gift is voluntary and establishes a network of solidarity and cooperation in a manner widespread in Muslim societies. Although spontaneous, the gifts due to the sadaqa show a certain regularity. A voluntary gift as the sadaqa thus becomes a regulative model for an obligation, the zakat, foreseen by the muslim law.
