| Résumé: | This article discusses collocation from the perspective of the foreign language learner and the pedagogical lexicographer. The author starts by pointing out a number of difficulties inherent in current definitions of collocation, such as the alleged binary character of collocations and the alleged differences in semantic weight between collocational constituents. He proceeds to discuss collocation between semantic features. This leads to suggestions for a new division of the collocational spectrum and for a revised definition of ‘collocation’ based on the notions of ‘usage norm’ and ‘holisticity’. The author then examines how collocations can be adequately represented in bilingual onomasiological dictionaries or ‘vocabulary books’. It is found that an onomasiological approach to dictionary making is better suited to this task than a semasiological, framework-based methodology whereby individual lexicographers work on small, alphabetically classified sections of the dictionary. |
