| Résumé: | This article, the fruit of an international collaboration focused on mobility and language learning, aims to understand the articulation between mobility in post-compulsory education and the role of French. It focuses on the added value of teaching French in two specific educational contexts: higher education in Brazilian federal universities at the beginning of the 21st century, and commercial education in Switzerland at the end of the 19th century. From a critical sociolinguistic perspective and based on textual data, the analysis of these two historical periods allows us to see how the value of French is constructed according to changing historical, educational, and social conditions. The article demonstrates that mobility enhances the attractiveness of training and contributes to the education of qualified professionals, whose acquired skills and knowledge will benefit their country of origin. It also highlights how the linguistic component of professional training helps to socially distinguish future workers in the fields of engineering and commerce, reinforcing the value of teaching French, the image of the institution and the training of a professional elite. |
