Description
Résumé:This article examines the digital practices of people over 60 with regard to gender. First, drawing on the INSEE’s Enquête Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication, it shows that there is little difference between men’s and women’s rates of digital usage. A series of in-dept interviews with three generations of older people then shed light on these slight differences, which appear to be the outcome of different digital socialization processes between men and women. Professional socialization to digital technology varies according to the professional (and the generation) and we note in particular that, in working-classes, women employees are more often socialized to digital technology than working-class men. As for family socialization to digital technology, it is more common among women. Finally, looking at the marital context of digital practices, we find that digital socialization between spouses is rare and that the marital context is a place where previous socializations crystallizes.
