| Sumari: | This study, which falls under self-determination theory (Ryan and Deci, 2017), aims to define secondary school students’ motivation to take part in physical education and sports (PE) lessons, while identifying the roles played by gender and students’ usual level of physical activity. A cluster analysis made it possible to identify four distinct motivational profiles among 539 secondary school (collège and lycée) students: “self-determined”, “determined”, “moderate”, “non-determined”. Differential analyses revealed significant links between a student’s motivational profile, gender and usual level of physical activity. Girls, students who do not engage in their school’s sports association (AS), those who do not undertake physical activities or sports outside school, and those showing low levels of physical activity are over-represented in the “non-determined” profile. Conversely, boys are over-represented in the “determined” profile. Moreover, students who participate in their AS or engage in physical activities and sports outside school are over-represented among the “self-determined” and “determined profiles”. These results are discussed before presenting the limitations and implications of the study. |
