| Résumé: | At least two authors have taken the strange step of publishing a more or less exhaustive archive of the drafts of one or more of their works, thus offering a sort of equivalent of what genetic criticism calls avant-texte. This article explores the category these curious literary objects form through the work of the poet Francis Ponge and of the novelist and essayist Jean-Philippe Toussaint. In both cases, their successive undertakings are not the application of a formula but rather a process of exploration that unfolds through the materials themselves: the manuscript and the digital file, the archive and the critical discourse, the resources of the book and the networked possibilities of the internet. In its various forms, the authorial avant-texte questions the relationships and limits between the work and its genesis, the text and the avant-texte, but also between transparency and opacity, between discourse and form, between criticism and creation. |
