With little more pretext than the words : “lo mejor será escoger el camino de Galta,” Octavio Paz begins one of his most compelling and perplexing works : "El mono gramático." Published originally in French in 1972, the text appears to be a travelogue from Paz’s time in India. But with its meticulous descriptions of Indian landscapes and an astute first person narration, the text winds like a rarely traveled path through metapoetic explorations. This paper considers "El mono gramático" within the tradition of several Surrealist texts-Andre Breton’s “Souvenir du Mexique,” among them-that narrate the confrontation with the Other in the context of a spiritual revelation. By situating this inquisition of language within the contemplation of an exotic landscape, Paz achieves what the cultural critic James Clifford would call “a modern ethnography of conjunctures.” |
