| الملخص: | The text criticizes the rhetorical and unclear use of the concept of democracy in public and academic debate. The author observes how «democracy» is often used to refer to everything that is considered good in politics, incorporating heterogeneous institutions and values – such as separation of powers, rule of law, social equality, transparency, participation– that are not necessarily democratic. This conceptual confusion is considered intellectually harmful and requires a process of conceptual clarification that starts from a rigorous definition of democracy as a form of government, i.e., a set of meta-norms on the production of law, whose axiological foundation is identified in the self-determination of citizens, tempered by the majority rule, formal equality, and fundamental political freedoms. |
