| Sumari: | This article draws on the 2019-2020 French Citizens Convention for Climate (CCC) to analyze how the deliberation on ecological issues should be understood. What are the potentials and limitations of the French experiment and, more generally, of the democratic innovations moving in this direction? How do they fit in the broader political context? The first part will analyze the extent to which we can speak of an «elective affinity» between randomly selected citizens’ assemblies and the climate challenge. It will scrutinize the French experiment and emphasize its specificity compared to other citizens’ assemblies: rather than following the jury model, the CCC became a political assembly. The second section will reflect on the type of deliberative system that the French case allows us to envision. Instead of conceiving the deliberative system according to the functionalist paradigm of the division of labor, which is sociologically inadequate to analyze real democracies, the article claims that the ecosystem paradigm better fits both normatively and sociologically to understand what a deliberative system including a deliberation on the ecology is and could be. |
