| Yhteenveto: | The essay reconstructs Norberto Bobbio’s analysis of the relationship between capitalism and democracy, with a focus on the link between democracy and socialism. Through a re-reading of essays published in the 1970s in the journal Mondo Operaio, the article addresses the critical issues Bobbio identified in the capitalism-democracy relationship. After noting that freedom of dissent in democratic regimes is not unlimited but stalls when the capitalist mode of production is questioned, Bobbio observes how capitalism negatively affects citizens’ decision-making sovereignty. To overcome this limitation, Bobbio imagines extending the democratic method to the main institutions of society, which he calls the transition from political democracy to social democracy. However, the philosopher identifies some problematic issues, particularly regarding the recognition of economic participation or «self-government of the producers». In conclusion, the article emphasizes the importance of considering an expansion of democracy at the social level as a potential remedy for increasingly brutal capitalism. |
