Özet:In the term «hybris», the Greeks condensed various aspects of a destructive attitude towards equity and trust in human relationships. The concepts of transgression, prepotency, violent oppression, arrogance, haughtiness and contempt for others fall within its semantic area; but what unites them and allows the application of this term with particular nuances in different contexts is the idea of overcoming a limit, within the logic that presides over each specific relationship. The existence of a limit is the premise of hybris; getting more is the stakes of its violation. This essay aims to carry out a survey of the hybris of the ancients by retracing the different aspects highlighted by Homer and Hesiod, Herodotus and Thucydides, the tragic poets and Plato, starting from the opposition of hybris to dike, in texts full of suggestions for a reflection on our times. From ancient texts, read with the necessary distancing, one can draw diagnoses on the typical dynamics of hybris as a perturbing phenomenon, represented through figures of animals, men and gods, who in different ways cross the limit between virtue and preeminence, power and prepotency, legal order and transgression, justice and prevarication, freedom and arrogance.
