The new animal ritualities

Between history and anthropology, this introduction looks at rituals that involve animals who do not act as mediators with invisible entities, but are in fact the actors or beneficiaries of the cult. As markers of new interspecific arrangements, three forms of rituality are emerging around the world, in a wide range of cultural and religious contexts: adaptations of old ritual forms in response to a new sensitivity to animals, the extension of traditional cults to include animals as beneficiaries, and the emergence of naturalistic neo-ritualities.
