| Sumario: | The analized and conserved embroidery fragments originate from a crypt in the “Goat church” in Sopron, Hungary. The tomb was found during the excavation between 1996 and 2011. The deceased was female, a noble from the 17th century, whose identity remained unknown. In 2013, several Hungarian conservators, art historians, archaeologists and chemists published information about the excavation, conservation and analysis of the valuable and rare precious-metal-woven clothing and other textiles in the coffin. However, some pieces of the textile materials were archived after a superficial cleaning. A group of fragments were recently cleaned, conserved and studied in an university project. The exact function, origin, motive and materials of the textile fragments that were found under the head were uncertain. During the cleaning and conserving processes, the research of analogies has shown that a similar design appears on two items in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. Also, similar objects were found in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Among the fragments, there were particles of embroidery which were under layers of decomposed materials. Other textiles were not visible on the archive photos of the excavation. We do not know of similar deathbed pillows or pillowcases of this quality or age in Hungary, which makes this find extraordinary. |
