| Izvleček: | Antoine Watteau often painted several versions of the same composition at different moments in his career. Each time it was changed and further developed. A close examination of these related paintings can provide important clues for the understanding of the artist’s working methods. This essay discusses a group of three paintings in Potsdam and London, establishing their relative chronology and their relationship. Watteau’s unconventional use of drawings is intimately linked with these questions. The essay concludes suggesting that a number of late paintings by Watteau can be seen as an academic re-interpretation of older compositions. |
