Description
Résumé:This article aims at presenting the concept and scope of The Rembrandt Database, an online research resource with art historical, technical, conservation and scientific information and documentation on Rembrandt paintings in collections over the world. A first public version of this inter-institutional research resource is due to be launched at www.rembrandtdatabase.org in 2012. Discussed here are the origins of and the reasons for this initiative, as well as its mission and scope. The article describes the content development for the website – through a joint effort of museums, research institutions and individual scholars – and the technology infrastructure used for this. Furthermore, the paper discusses possibilities for the future growth and further development of The Rembrandt Database, also in relation to similar initiatives.
