| Gaia: | Technical study of the National Gallery’s important collection of paintings by Rembrandt goes back to the 1940s when serious conservation work began, aided by scientific investigation of the pictures. This article covers some of the history of technical examination of Rembrandt’s paintings in London and the origins of a wide-ranging material survey of the collection in the late 1980s that resulted in the first of the Gallery’s ‘Art in the Making’ exhibitions. Subsequent studies to extend this work are also described. The article looks forward to the future of Rembrandt technical research, its dynamic nature in the 21st century and the continuing relevance to art historians and conservators. |
