Yhteenveto:The article analyzes literary descriptions from selected short stories by Kornel Filipowicz in the context of preventive humanities and virtue epistemology. The author inquires into the functions of description, showing it to be an exercise of patience, perseverance, and other intellectual virtues crucial not only for understanding literature but also for forming prosocial and anticipatory attitudes. The author considers the virtue of patience on three levels – the descriptive situation, the description’s rationale, and the fragmentary nature of description in general – arguing that especially long and detailed descriptions, while challenging the reader’s attention, are ethical gestures capable of reforming the common imagination, enhancing social and individual resilience, and supporting adaptability in the state of permanent crisis.
