Yhteenveto:Mainstream, American psychology emphasizes theoretical and methodological universalism, treating cultural differences as noise that impedes an objective take of reality. Such an approach precludes an accurate description and understanding of local manifestations of psychological functioning of a person understood as a culturally embedded subject. This article considers assumptions of indigeneous psychology as a proposal for solving the above problem. The text compares individual authors’ perspectives, which results in a juxtaposition of epistemological approaches on the universalism–indigeneity continuum. The article assesses the degree of indigeneity in the context of ontology and epistemology: respectively the locality of the studied object or the researcher’s perspective. The text considers the matter on the example of indigeneous thinking application to the history of psychological thought of pre-Christian Slavs.
