| الملخص: | The article analyzes selected poems by the Ojibwe poet Heid E. Erdrich in the context of a discussion on the perception of indigeneous knowledge systems by researchers representing the Western model of understanding and doing science. Erdrich’s work foregrounds the tendency in the Anglo-American tradition to dismiss indigeneous science as a set of cultural and religious beliefs that are not based on rational thought. The first part of the article explains the concept of biocolonialism and shows how pressing it is for indigenous communities not only in the scientific but also the political and cultural contexts. The second part juxtaposes the indigenous and the Western models of science and modern biotechnologies based on genetics and genomics, which have given rise to such disciplines as population genetics and such products as home genetic testing. The third part provides a reading of selected Erdrich poems as an example of literary commentary on biocolonialism and biotechnology. |
