Résumé:In 2007, director Stefan Bachmann combined the three plays L’Otage, Le Pain dur, Le Père humilié into a single production entitled Die Gottlosen (The Ungodly) at the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin and performed them all in one evening for the first time. This remarkable production was largely met with considerable criticism, whereas the prior German performances had been positively received. The article documents the high quality of the new translation by Herbert Meier (1928-2018), performed at the same venue, as well as the production itself, and questions the reasons behind its unjust condemnation by the press.
