| Riassunto: | The main aim of this paper is to determine the evolution of the major French pilgrimage routes to Compostela during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. We have examined the documents which have reached our days and which contain the pilgrimage itineraries of the above mentioned centuries. The myriad texts with the same route would indicate a frequent use of the said way. On the contrary, lack or infrequent texts referring to other pilgrimage ways would show that these were not frequently used. The central conclusions drawn are that the Paris-Bayonne route was very frequently used until mid-18th century, pilgrims from Béarn and the French southeast were treading mainly through Roncesvalles. We also conclude that the transit of pilgrims on the Lemovicensis and Podiensis ways were very rare. |
