| Περίληψη: | This paper analyses one of French theatre’s “grand valets”, the servant Crispin, who appeared in the mid-seventeenth century and who reached the height of success in the eighteenth century. The figure of Crispin has mainly been investigated as the protagonist of the eighteenth-century works of Lesage and Regnard; however, this character originated in the seventeenth century under the influence of the Spanish servant, the gracioso, and its Italian counterpart, the zanni of the Commedia dell’Arte. Crispin evolved thanks to the great actor and dramatist Raymond Poisson, who was able to determine its physical appearance, its costume and its character. Thanks to Poisson, Crispin won the role of “valet vedette” of the late seventeenth-century French theatre, while retaining its features as a clever but clumsy servant, as the perpetrator but most often the victim of misdeeds, all traits that Crispin inherited from the rich interplay of influences at the basis of its success. |
