| 總結: | Servants in Renaissance comedy play a role that is only seemingly secondary. They actually have a pivotal role. Running back and forth through the streets of the city on exhausting errands is their lot and they can regularly be heard complaining about their miserable conditions. Nevertheless, such exuberant business does not come without a few salutary breaks, when the servants cheerfully make the best of the amenities of the town. Most importantly, this ceaseless to and fro is what allows information to circulate and thereby enables the plot to move on. Therefore, one can identify at least two reasons why the servants are so important: not only are they the driving force behind the action, but they are also those who conjure up the urban space in which the play is set. This paper intends to explain why the characters of the servants can be seen as symbolising comedy as a whole. |
