Περίληψη:In Stendhal’s novels, the senses catalyze the thoughts and feeling of characters, who are described as embodied beings. This article attends to the way in which Stendhal uses hands (and, in one remarkable episode, feet) to represent intersubjectivity in Armance and Le Rouge et le Noir. The analysis reveals how Stendhal conceives of touch as the phenomenologically primary sense. It shows how Stendhal positions touch as an alternative and — to the extent that it functions as an egalitarian force and not a conquering one – as a mode of communication that is more effective than speech or writing. Touch can thus serve as a means of knowing oneself and others, but only insofar as it is not strategic or deliberative.
