| Riassunto: | Abstract: This essay suggests a dually dimensioned conceptual model as a useful framework in which to situate the articles devoted to the dynamics of water resource management presented in this collection: rapid, generally monopolistic, capitalist exploitation of natural resources leading to a region’s integration into a larger regional, national, or global market, accompanied by the growth of a “hydraulic trap.”Both elements have been central to the development of environmental history as a field of inquiry in the United States, particularly well illustrated in the history of California, and both can be applied to the articles in this volume. Drawn from the foundational work of environmental historians in the 1980s and 1990, they have proved to have lasting value in framing discussions of environment and hydrology in the American west and elsewhere. |
