Sammanfattning:The aim of this article is to trace the emergence of the sub-field of Israeli cultural history within the broader field of Israeli history, to highlight its major themes and to explain their prominence. In addition, the article summarizes the main contributions of this sub-field to the writings of Israeli history. Israeli cultural history emerged during the 1990s, as a new generation of Israeli historians decided to turn away from the more traditional approaches of the previous generation, which included political, diplomatic and military history. The new generation was influenced by the rise of the new cultural history in the English-speaking academic world and maintained a critical attitude toward the official Zionist narrative. From its emergence until the mid-2000s, Israeli cultural history focused on various aspects of Zionist nation building in Israel. While works on this theme continued after the mid-2000s, this period also marked the rise of monographs addressing non-national, private and individual aspects of Israeli cultural history. The exceptional importance of culture within Zionist nation building explains the prominent place of this theme in Israeli cultural history.
