| Izvleček: | This article investigates the Liberal Democrats’ unprecedented success in the 2024 British general election, which saw the party become the country’s third political force in the House of Commons once again, with 72 seats. This result appears extraordinary and unprecedented, breaking away with the party’s streak of poor performances since 2015. We thus provide some avenues to explain the party’s success, focusing mostly on the party’s disciplined ground campaign. It nevertheless hides several long-lasting difficulties that the party has not yet overcome, as well as new dilemmas that it will need to resolve. First, success at the Conservatives’ expense in the Blue Wall seats relies on tactical voting and fierce targeting of resources, and does not point to voters’ positive endorsement of the Liberal Democrats. Second, the party’s success among traditionally conservative voters is likely to weaken the party’s prospects of making progress against the now incumbent Labour government, and reveals a growing contradiction between the party’s centre-left policy proposals and centre-right electorate. Third, the Liberal Democrats now hold a number of marginal seats, as well as very few second places, which risks damaging their prospects in the next general election. Finally, the 2024 results create a tension between the party’s mastery of FPTP and its repeated demands for the introduction of proportional representation at the national level. In the last analysis, the result might be more lukewarm than it appears and might paradoxically threaten the stability of the party’s standing, as well as its future progress. |
