| Sumario: | This paper considers archpriest Avvakum’s notions about nature and the cosmos in the light of the two cosmological models, which co-existed in Russian culture in the Seventeenth century. Focusing on Avvakum’s engagement with both geocentric and flat Earth conceptions of the universe, the study highlights the hybridity of Avvakum’s notions, since elements in his writings refer to both flat-Earth picture, and the geocentric picture of the world with a rotating celestial sphere. This hybridity is obvious in the Archpriest’s notions about the localisation of hell and paradise. Avvakum pictures landscapes as icons. Thus, his depictions are structured according to the model of ekphrasis and their elements arranged according to the vertical and horizontal plane principles. Finally, Avvakum’s writings reveal a tendency towards the empirical verification of knowledge, when Avvakum had the possibility to relate it to his everyday experience. |
