| Summary: | Autobiographical self-fashioning lies at the very heart of Taras Shevchenko’s work, both as writer and artist. Nowhere is this more evident than in the dozens of self-portraits Shevchenko created during the course of his entire life in a variety of media and in a variety of configurations. This article constitutes a preliminary attempt to classify this œuvre based on the system introduced by Omar Calabrese in his 2006 study Artists’ Self-portraits. In the process, it also suggests, when relevant, parallels to and connections with Shevchenko’s written work. |
