الملخص:This paper aims to present the main problems encountered by Osipov and Thomas, the authors of a new BCMS (Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian) grammar in French: – Is it justified to write a common grammar when we are now dealing with four different standards? The answer is affirmative since it is in fact a single linguistic system, polystandardized (as it already was for Serbo-Croatian), as are English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, etc. How should this single linguistic system be called? The least unsatisfactory choice seems to be BCMS, with the initials of the four names in alphabetical order.– Methodological and technical problems: the question of the alphabet (Latin or Cyrillic?); the presentation of western and eastern variants side by side, separated by a slash (vlak / voz) with an explicit indication for the potential variants unique to Bosnian or Montenegrin; the presentation of the Ekavian / (I)jekavian opposition (different evolutions of the former vowel jat) with the use of brackets (ml[ij]eko) or a reverse slash (leto \ ljeto). The systematic accentuation, not only of words but also of all the example phrases, raises the problem of the numerous accentual variants, but can reveal phenomena that might otherwise go unnoticed (opposition between determinate and indeterminate adjectives, transfer – or lack thereof – of the accent on prepositions, changes in the accentual system).– Our grammar is intended not only to be prescriptive for the norm(s) of the standard language(s), but also descriptive, especially when the usage is in conflict with the standard, whether the standard agrees to endorse the usage or rejects it; several examples are given for phonetics, morphology and syntax.– The description of the BCMS language in French poses terminological problems, related to different traditions in the naming of some grammatical features in BCMS and French, and certain set traditions in French for the description of Slavic languages. These problems have been resolved differently in each case.
