Yhteenveto:The migration-development relationship has been constructed around several myths. Although they have been deconstructed, they are continually revived. Introduced to the global agenda in the mid-2000s, this nexus has become widely accepted, obscuring the challenging paths taken by the actors embodying this interrelationship to establish their legitimacy in the development field. Using a diachronic approach, this article revisits the migration-development relationship through the prism of local spaces, focusing on villages of departure in the Kayes region of Mali. Drawing on long-term research, it examines the evolving forms of this relationship and the dynamics of politicisation and depoliticisation at local and national levels. Migrant development associations, through their innovative practices, have shaped particular territories, earning them recognition in retrospect. Initially claiming to be apolitical, these associations have become counter-powers. The findings shed light on the complexity and political turbulence surrounding the migration-development relationship, far removed from the smooth image promoted by dominant institutions.
