| Riassunto: | This article examines the 2025 Danish court case against Rasmus Paludan and his associate for the “improper treatment” of an English translation of the Qur’an, under Denmark’s “Qur’an law” amendment to the Criminal Code in 2023. Paludan’s improper treatment has implications for religious freedom, state authority, and Islam in Denmark’s geopolitical context. Drawing on dramaturgical theory and trial materials, the article explores the contested meanings of the Qur’an as a simulacrum, as seen in the claim that the text in question was not a “real” Qur’an. Here, Paludan’s performative role as a Trickster-Jester blurs the boundaries between politics, religion, and spectacle, challenging legal and societal definitions of the Qur’an’s sanctity. |
