| Gaia: | The article analyzes Hotel Arcadia (2015) by Sunny Singh, a novel influenced by Susan Sontag’s theories on photography. This intermedial novel uses photographic ekphraseis that draw inspiration from photographers such as Andres Serrano, Kevin Carter or James Nachtwey. Sunny Singh illustrates how photographing horror is not enough to convey the outrageousness of war. This article also studies the aesthetic humanization effected by the main character. The article shows how Hotel Arcadia uses intermediality to explore the photographic event, its ethical implications and traumatic after-effects, showing that the humanity of the photographed subjects is aesthetically revealed when the photographer herself becomes aware of it. |
