| Sumario: | This paper starts with reconstructing the political and local government processes that have taken place in Cosenza in the last 15 years. Its purpose is to analyse the main features and the processes of change in the political personnel of Calabria and Southern Italy.The first part of the paper looks at the structural elements of the political personnel in Calabria (e.g. the role of peripheral location; the impact a process of modernisation without industrialisation has on the relation between politics and economy; political patronage and the politicisation of primary relations).The second part presents an analysis of the specific forms taken by political action within contexts that posses the above mentioned structural elements (e.g. the subordination of the political parties to specific and particular interests; the processes of exchange between political and electoral contexts linked to networks and strategies based on the management of public spending; neopatrimonial trends).The last part identifies a profile of this political personnel using the criteria on which is based its professionalization: development and competences, recruitment, family links, oligarchic trends, duration, status, life stiles, enrichment). |
