Crynodeb:While in the United States Edward C. Banfield’s book «The Moral Basis of a Backward Society» generated an interest which was mainly methodological, its reception in Italy was accompanied by a tough discussion due to its political implications as related to the underdevelopment of Southern Italy. Banfield’s investigation emphasised the necessity to focus not only on the structural deficiency experienced by this society, such as the lack of economic reforms, but primarily on its cultural peculiarity, that is, on its ethos which Banfield identified as «amoral familism». In this regard, the article stresses the fact that this ethos is nowadays spreading into all aspects of the Southern Italy.
