| Shrnutí: | Enzo Rutigliano’s The Language of the Masses represents a very interesting and valuable contribution to the reconstruction of the troubled relationship between Elias Canetti and the discipline of sociology. Rutigliano consistently makes the case that the ‘unsettling masterpiece’ known as Crowds and Power should rank as a classic for the social sciences. In order to do so, the author attempts to retrieve a series of authors, in particular Durkheim, Adorno and Lévi-Strauss, whose interests for the phenomena of social order, power and collective behaviour share similar concerns as Canetti’s. Whereas the relevance of Canetti to classical sociology is soundly established by Rutigliano, I conclude the review essay by arguing that today the most challenging aspects of Canetti’s work is to be found in relation to contemporary sociology, and in particular to social ontology and epistemology. Canetti’s methodological heterodoxy makes his work all the more exciting and precious to revive sociological imagination on a series of crucial phenomena that are beeing largely neglected by the most fashionable contemporary sociological theories. |
