Sumario:In this article I analyse the history of migration policies in the UK as focusing in different moments on colonial, EU, and qualified migrations. While migrations to the country have always been diverse, the policy attention has been in different moments focused on managing the status of migrants from (former) colonies; relying on arrivals based on EU freedom of movement, and then limiting the same through Brexit; and limiting overall migration with exceptions for applicants with high formal qualifications and offers for better-paid jobs. The analysis highlights the contribution of the stratification of migrants’ legal statuses to the overall stratification of migration, the combination of deliberate policy aims and unforeseen consequences, and the specific vulnerability that can characterise the holders of ‘legacy’ statuses.
