| Riassunto: | Why do moral values became cause for conflict and division within the same political group or party? This essay approaches this question from perspectives already found in both Rousseau and Tocqueville: that the modern politics maintain a foundamental and peculiar religious character, despite the inevitable secularization of society. Making use of Parsons’ values theory and integrating it with other theoretical approaches, we analyse the complex relation between values and social structure. From this we argue not only the inevitable relativisation of values, but additionally that values are a “contingency formulae”, abstract symbols for many possible ends in a changing society. We than explore why values are so important in politics and why they produce conflict and not consent, contrary to claims found in widely known sociological theories. |
