Özet:This article focuses on the function of storytelling in Paradise, exploring performance and its entanglement with complex identities in the early twentieth-century East Africa where the novel is set. In Paradise, indeed, identities are staged, watched, and decoded, reflecting the shifting hierarchies resulting from the instability of a fragmented society. I analyse the tensions between performing and watching, between actors and spectators (and activity and passivity) to outline the functions of performance and interpretation.
