| Zusammenfassung: | This article examines the confrontation between the Conservative government and the miners in the winter of 1992-3. It will argue that, although the miners managed to force John Major onto the defensive, they were ultimately unsuccessful as they were unable to put a stop to the government’s pit closure plan. It will also suggest that the dispute was unusual in that it was not a traditional labour movement conflict. It concealed a number of issues which were important to other sections of the British population and it had no clear winner. |
