| Résumé: | Understanding of the impact of the financial crisis on active labour market policy in the experiences of out-of-work partnered families is limited. Recent work examining the influence of labour market policy on jobseekers has focused on individuals or macro-level single country studies. Literature on work-life balance under austerity has primarily studied policy targeting of those in work. Nonetheless, family policy is integral to active labour market policy and workless families are the focus of increasing policy attention, particularly in the UK. This paper, based on a qualitative study of out-of-work partnered parents conducted in 2013 enables analysis of how differences in active labour market policies under austerity are borne out in parental experiences within France and the UK. The paper suggests that despite austerity, active labour market policies towards out-of-work parents continue to differ in the two countries, with support being broader, more reactive and more personalised in France. |
