| Shrnutí: | One particularly fascinating aspect of the referendum on Scotland’s future was the inordinate involvement and engagement of Britain’s celebrities on both sides of the debate. Well-known names either endorsed or opposed one of the two campaigns – either they did this willingly, out of a sense of commitment to the cause, or they were, perhaps, journalistically or politically coerced into taking sides. By way of select examples, this paper will examine the role of celebrities who engaged in or were instrumentalised in the debate, how they were acclaimed or criticised, and in how far their endorsement meant they were genuinely committed to a cause, and it will also look at the role of celebrity endorsement in influencing the degree of participation in the debate, the numbers voting at the polls and the final outcome of the referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country. |
