| Sumario: | The aim of this article is to better understand the use of the term ἐπιστρέφω in the Septuagint. This emblematic term reflects the ability of the Greek translators to render concepts specific to the Hebrew language, taking into consideration its semantic value. First, I will consider the term’s basic meaning: a movement in space (e.g., Jonah 1:13; Exod 4:20); in a second step I will consider the meaning when the term is used to indicate a change in the moral and religious sense (e.g., Deut 30:10; Psalm 21:28LXX). Thus, this article gives insight into the two specific usages of ἐπιστρέφω in the LXX. In fact, it can be considered a technical term in the same way as the Latin term conversio, which entered modern languages as “conversion”. |
