| Resumo: | The Maria Edgeworth Letters Project (MELP) aims to make an open-access digital archive containing the complete correspondence of the Anglo-Irish Regency author Maria Edgeworth (1768–1849) and her circle. TEI is central to this project, as it is used to encode the text of the letters, create indices of named persons, places, and works, and ensure interoperability of the project in the long term. To date, more than two hundred letters have been encoded and made available on our beta site.1 In the next three years, this interinstitutional collaborative project plans to encode a total of five hundred letters and provide minimal metadata for all remaining digitized letters. While oXygen, XSLT, and other standard TEI tools are central to supporting the work that will allow the project team to achieve this goal, this proceedings paper2 aims to highlight the key role that OpenRefine plays in transforming spreadsheet data into indices defining persons, places, and works, as well as minimal TEI files. It also strives to raise awareness of how this general data cleaning and transformation tool can be used specifically in a TEI context by those with varying degrees of technical expertise. |
